Independence Day ~ A Celebration across Time
Sunday, July 4, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.
The rousing traditions that, early on, turned July 4 into America’s greatest national holiday, still flourish in this year’s grand celebration of Independence Day at Genesee Country Village & Museum.
Parade and pomp, music and merriment, and games galore are all part of the day’s July 4 festivities, highlighted by the swearing in of new American citizens.
See how Americans celebrated July 4th differently over the years with visits to Independence Day in three different settings around the historical village: the 1826 Jubilee, the1876 Centennial and the Sesquicentennial of 1926.Cheer on the grand parade, enjoy patriotic concerts by the Geneseo Cornet and the Pittsford Fire Department bands, dive into the pie-eating contest and compete in several fun competitions, including tug of war, watermelon seed-spitting, sack races, egg tosses, peashooter contest, even a greased pole climb. There will also be ladies’ base ball, 19th-century style.
Revisit Susan B. Anthony’s protest at the 1876 Centennial celebration of the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia when she issued the stirring Declaration of Rights.
Meanwhile, the Honorable Judge Michael A. Telesca will conduct the official United States naturalization ceremony at 11 a.m. on the steps of the historic village’s Town Hall.
