Civil War Reenactment

Saturday & Sunday, July 17 & 18, 10 a.m - 5 p.m.

Genesee Country Village & Museum’s Civil War Reenactment on July 17 and 18 will, for the first time, feature two battles each day with mounted cavalry units.

The second engagement (at 2p.m.) will be held in an open field, surrounded by woods, not unlike typical confrontations during the War Between the States.

The museum’s historic village will be interpreted as a small Virginia town in 1863 with the armies encamped around it.

Virginia was a border state and often communities experienced political division, with some residents supporting the South and others the North.

In fact, West Virginia left its neighbors  in 1863 and became the Union's newest state.

Visitors can also experience these torn sympathies first hand.

Townsfolk occupying the village will offer musical concerts, specialty shopping and vignettes depicting civilian life during the war. The military camps will also be open for inspection during the day.  Cavalry exercises begin at 11:30 p.m. each day on the Great Meadow.

Regiments from throughout Western New York took part in dozens of skirmishes and battles.  One of the most famous regiments was Rochester’s 140th New York Volunteer Infantry who saved the day at Gettysburg by occupying Little Round Top on the second day.

The Rochester regiment’s valor under the leadership of Col. Patrick O’Rourke is legendary and preserved the Union Army on that critical day of fighting in 1863.

The recreated 140th Regiment, along with hundreds of other re-enactors, will be on hand to recreate a typical battle. While major Civil War battles involved upwards of 150,000 troops, small unit skirmishes and engagements within larger battles often turned the tide.

The reenactments on both days will be typical of those types of heroic actions where a regiment like the courageous 140th saved the army.

Battles begin at noon and 2 p.m. on both days.  The noon skirmish will take place in the historic village. The 2 p.m.  encounter occurs in Upper Staging area, where there will also be special period seating.

Donald Mang, author of One Nation under God, will be on hand for book signings each day. Ron Matteson, author of Civil War Campaigns of the 10th New York Cavalry, will sign books on Saturday.

The weekend’s activities are coordinated by the 140th New York Volunteer Infantry and the 22nd Virginia Battalion.
