Laura Ingalls Wilder Days
Saturday & Sunday, August 7-8, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Did you know that Almanzo Wilder was born near Malone, N.Y.?
Or that Charles Ingalls was born in Cuba, N.Y.?
Celebrate the writings of one of the most popular writers of 19th-century frontier life with Laura Ingalls Wilder Day on Aug. 7-8 and learn more about Laura's ties to Western New York.
Commemorated through two television series and 10 novels, Laura Ingalls captured the imagination of girls of every age.
To help remember Laura’s many adventures will be Dean Butler, who portrayed “Almanzo Wilder,” Laura’s husband, on the television series Little House on the Prairie.
Butler’s presentations will include Q&A sessions as well as the opportunity for an autograph. (Autographs are $5 if a museum item is purchased to be signed; $10 for an item brought from home. Tickets may be purchased in advance at the event; 1 p.m. sesson is limited to 100; the 4 p.m. signing is unlimited)
Also appearing will be William Anderson, well known historian, lecturer, Wilder biographer and author of more than a dozen books on Laura and her family, including Pioneer Girl, the biography Laura Ingalls Wilder, A Little House Sampler and The Story of the Wilders.
Anderson's autographs are free.
A special display of about 30 artifacts associated with Laura Ingalls Wilder, including rare ambrotypes and a book "Pa" Charles read to Laura and her sisters as children, will be in the museum's Meeting Center.
Young boys and girls are invited to dress as their favorite "Little House" character and join in a noon Children's Promenade. The categories include Laura, Almanzo and Miscellaneous—all other television and book characters. Promenade registrations will close at 11:45 a.m. the day of the event.
From kneading bread, churning butter, making plum jam or creating corn husk dolls to two-man sawing and rope making, the historic village will be alive with activities that a young Laura (or Almanzo) would have experienced.
Visitors are invited to compete in sack and three-legged races, a greased pole climb and watermellon seed-spitting contest or enjoy a horse-drawn wagon ride, among many other activities.
