Unless otherwise noted, all programs take place during regular museum hours. Additional fees may apply for some programs. From June through September, the museum offers a variety of daily village walks, talks and 19th-century activities -- these are listed on the museum day sheet. Every Sunday at 2 p.m. year round, the museum's Genesee Country Nature Center offers naturalist-led walks that focus on the area's flora, fauna, minerals and more. Spring Peepers Thursday 1-3 p.m.— A special three-session nature class for children ages 4 & 5. Each class will introduce the children to the wonders of nature in spring through stories, crafts, nature walks and more. Snack provided. Reservations required. Fee: $25/$20 members. Trail Work Day Saturday 9 a.m.-noon— Maintaining the nature center trails takes a lot of hard work. Join us for a morning of trail work and make new friends as we improve the trail system and gather at noon for a group lunch. (Bring bag lunch and any clippers or rakes you have to spare). Salamanders, Frogs and Polliwogs Sunday 2 p.m.— Join us on this woodland hike as we search for local amphibians, including wood frogs, spotted salamanders and more. NC

Breakfast with the Birds: Warblers Saturday 8-10 a.m. — Enjoy a continental breakfast followed by a walk to search for migrating spring warblers. $6/$4 members. Reservations required. NC

Wildflower Sale Saturday & Sunday 10 a.m.-5 p.m. — Our annual wildflower sale will take place on the Nature Center front porch featuring propagated wildflowers from Ellen Folts of Amanda’s Garden. Choose from trillium, trout lily, hepatica, maidenhair fern and more. NC

Mother's Day/Salute to Women

Sunday 10 a.m.-5 p.m. — Spend Mother’s Day among leaders of the women’s rights movement in the 19th-century, including Susan B Anthony, Amelia Bloomer, Sojourner Truth, Mary Jemison and others in their quest for suffrage and equal rights. Mothers admitted free.

Special Mother's Day Brunch available 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Reservations required.

New Exhibit Opens Sunday 10 a.m.-5 p.m.— The exhibition Under Open Skies: Nature Past and Present offers breathtaking vistas of nature captured by artists past and present. Complimenting the 18th-, 19th- and 20th-century art will be 150 juried paintings from the Genesee Valley Plein Air Painters, Inc., a locally based artist association who continue the 19th-century passion for “plein air” painting, or painting outdoors in the open air. Spectacular views of earth, sky, water—and creatures great and small—unfold before the visitor, along with the changing view of nature itself as encountered by the artists. Subjects will include landscapes, buildings and other historic places representing the Genesee Valley region. AG

FAMILY FUN DAY: Wildflowers Sunday noon.-4 p.m.— During this day of fun for the entire family we’ll explore the woods and fields to learn all about wildflowers and make a special craft for Mom. Enjoy a 2 p.m. walk through the spring woods to look for common wildflowers including hepatica, trout lily, cut-leaf toothwort and others.

History Talks— Feast or Famine: Preservation is the Answer Wednesday 2:30 p.m. — Join the museum's lead interpreter of Foodways Sylvia Fraser in an examination of how pioneers survived long trips and harsh winters. Her talk will encompass at least a dozen methods used in the 19th century. You'll be amazed at their ingenuity. At Valley Manor Apartments, 1570 East Ave., Rochester. Fee: $5. Birds of the Oatka Creek Property Saturday & Sunday 2 p.m. — Join an expedition to investigate the many birds that make their homes around swamps, ponds and creeks and that call our property home.

Birthday Party for Tom & Mike Thursday 11 a.m.— Help us celebrate our oxen team of Tom & Mike’s fifth birthday at their home pasture at the Pioneer Farmstead. Dress in your favorite bovine attire, bring the oxen a card and enjoy a birthday treat. .

Civil War Candlelight Tour Saturday 6-9 p.m.— Witness on this one-hour walking tour, an evening of recreated events that those who lived them would not soon forget. Reservations for this guided tour required. Adults $12/$10. Not recommended for children under 10.

Secrets in the Stones Sunday 2 p.m.— Search for evidence of ancient seas, glaciers and old farms as you learn to read the stories written in the stones.

Memorial Day

Sacrifice and Valor Remembered

Monday 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Join us this Memorial Day as we salute our armed forces with a special flag raising; formal ceremony with wreath-laying and 21-gun salute; patriotic concerts; exhibits of military vehicles, equipment and uniforms, black powder demonstrations; and other special tributes. There is free admission for military--both active and retired.

In conjunction with the release of its new CD Honor, Portraits of America, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra performs selections from the recording honoring veterans and celebrating America’s heritage at 2 p.m. Highlights include Jeff Tyzik’s 2003 Pleasant Valley Suite, written in commemoration of GCVM’s 25th anniversary. The Veterans Outreach Center in Rochester will receive $2 from each CD sale. Tyzik will be on hand to sign CDs immediately following the concert.

There will also be performances by the Genesee Harmonic Society (1 p.m.) and the Webster Village Concert Band (4 p.m.).

Oatka Creek Exploration: Bats, Bugs & Beaver Friday 7:30 p.m. — On this evening hike we’ll explore the habitats that are home to local bats, bugs, and beaver. Reservations required. Reservations required. Adults $5/$3 members; youth (4-16) $3/$1 members; free to children three and younger.
